Rules, Regulations & Licenses
Before you cast your line, make sure you’re following Florida fishing regulations. A fishing license is required for most anglers, with additional permits needed for certain species.
Saltwater Fishing Licenses
A Florida saltwater fishing license is required when fishing in the Gulf or coastal waters, including Anna Maria Island. Additional stamps are needed for species like snook, crawfish, and spiny lobster. A tarpon stamp is required to keep a tarpon but not for catch-and-release fishing.
Freshwater Fishing Licenses
Visitors 16 and older who plan to fish in freshwater or brackish waters must have a Florida freshwater fishing license. Licenses can be purchased at local bait shops, sporting goods stores, or online at Go Outdoors Florida.
Exemptions
No license is required for:
Children under 16
Florida residents over 65
Florida residents fishing from shore or fixed structures
Guests fishing with a licensed charter captain
Florida residents in the Armed Forces on leave
Individuals certified as totally and permanently disabled
Non-residents fishing from a licensed pier

When in doubt, always check the latest rules on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission website
